2009 Youth Jazz Workshops

For many years, the Youth Jazz Workshops have been an important part of the Wangaratta Jazz festival program. Traditionally, the workshops were held on the Friday, and were targetted primarily at secondary-level music students.

This has presented some difficulties, as there is a clash on the festival’s opening day with VCE English examinations, and also the Friday timeslot might not work for anyone who has to travel to Wangaratta to attend the festival. At the suggestion of Wayne Robinson (an active local musician, and Director of the Northern Rivers Academy Of Music), who has co-ordinated the workshops for the last few years, the festival has opted for a change of format this year.

The Youth Jazz Workshops will be staged throughout the festival weekend (Saturday and Sunday) at The Centre, in Chisholm Street, Wangaratta.

Sessions (including a daily jam session) will be conducted by several prominent jazz and blues musicians, including:

  • Bob Sedergreen

  • Kristen Berardi

  • Adam Simmons

  • Sam Anning

  • Ross Irwin

  • Adam Paige

  • Dane Alderson

  • Tony Gould

  • John Morrison

  • Eugene Ball

The target audience is secondary-level music students, although younger and older participants will also be made welcome.

For the first time, the workshops will culminate in a free public concert, to be held in the Performing Arts Centre’s Theatre on Monday 2 November, from 5.00-6.00pm.

Participation in the Youth Jazz Workshops is free for school students, $10 for tertiary students, $20 for other participants. In all cases, pre-registration is required :

Inspiration

"For the past twenty years, the city of Wangaratta has played a critical role in the development of jazz in this country. Its annual Festival has helped nurture a generation of talented musicians, and provided a forum for experimentation; and in doing so has challenged audiences to expand their musical horizons. For those of us who have followed the Festival from its infancy, it’s been an incredible journey. I know I speak for many in wishing Wangaratta Jazz every success for its next twenty years."  Des Cowley, Rythms Magazine 2009
